Philip K. Dick... Books, Comics, Movies

Revolutionary science fiction writer Philip K. Dick's last epic novel Do Androids Dream Electric Sheep? is revisited by BOOM! Studios in the new trans-titled comic book series. Here's an article. Here's a link concerning the original series.

Recently read some Dick, so I was happy to stumble upon this. I was also checking out some of his first editions on ebay, which are ridiculously priced... I think. Anyways, the short story The Minority Report was the first story I read of his. Familiar with the Spielberg production of the story I was quite pleased to find the original story much more complex; fully exploiting the possibilities in plot twists presented by three ever correcting psychics on one man's fate. WHOAAA... Anyways it was a great read. Two thumbs.

Any who, here are some random Philip K. Dick links to short stories, info, etc.

"Mom, what's dying?"

I watched a show last night on the latest research of death. It described death as a process rather than a precise moment. Throughout the program it moved through several cases in which new methods were applied to patients in various conditions which would "blur the lines between life and death", as the narrator put it.

One case dealt with a man who lived through a heart attack, but wasn't instantly recovered. Like many survivors he awoke in a coma, and was threatened with brain damage if he survived. So, a doctor took a different approach to reviving him, and intentionally induced hypothermia. Evidently once brain cells have been deprived of oxygen for too long, an instant burst of oxygen is the last thing they need. So, the doc figured if he slowed his metabolism and lowered the levels of oxygen necessary to live he could slowly revive the patient by slowly exposing him to more and more oxygen. The guy woke up a couple of weeks later wondering how he got where he was, and was perfectly fine. Check it out link

Ancient Mariner Books

I visited a book store in Annaville today, yup it's blowing up, a fucking book store man! It's called "Ancient Mariner Books" and its located at 11229 Leopard, (right across from McDonalds on Violet). Surprisingly, and honestly, it's the coolest book store I've ever been in. The owner, Tim, was very friendly and excessively knowledgeable about literature. He has some of the rarest and most interesting books I've laid eyes on. I found a first edition of Einstein's Cosmic Religion , and he's holding it for me because I didn't have enough funds for my fancy. Anyways, if there are any Annavillians out there reading this, check it out for your own sake. This building is where it's at.
