We Can Remember It For You Wholesale

Today, I read the original inspiration for the 90's sci-fi flick Total Recall with Schwarzenegger and loved it equally as much as the movie.

The movie expands greatly upon the very short story written by Philip K. Dick, and does justice to the loose ends he left. In the short story he never actually returns to mars to seek out the truth of his secret mission; he instead turns himself in to discover the truth of his past and to avoid any further damage or confusion in his life. The ending to the short story is very cool though, but would have been impossible to include in the plot of the movie.

Read it.

Philip K. Dick... Books, Comics, Movies

Revolutionary science fiction writer Philip K. Dick's last epic novel Do Androids Dream Electric Sheep? is revisited by BOOM! Studios in the new trans-titled comic book series. Here's an article. Here's a link concerning the original series.

Recently read some Dick, so I was happy to stumble upon this. I was also checking out some of his first editions on ebay, which are ridiculously priced... I think. Anyways, the short story The Minority Report was the first story I read of his. Familiar with the Spielberg production of the story I was quite pleased to find the original story much more complex; fully exploiting the possibilities in plot twists presented by three ever correcting psychics on one man's fate. WHOAAA... Anyways it was a great read. Two thumbs.

Any who, here are some random Philip K. Dick links to short stories, info, etc.

Small Bits of Big Thoughts

From 2005-2009

A spotlight upon uncertainty, and a mystic vibration.
This wave is leading me into a mood I've never known.

To ignore is to give in,
and to proceed is a promise to never look back again.
There's nowhere to turn in this hallway,
in this body.

Just keep from crying, but don't hold it in;
Abandon it all together, or fear will never end.

A body draped in light, and it's message twists you.
I've become a planet, an entire galaxy even,
but there's nothing I can do.

Layers and layers of reality intertwine
through light, sound, and an actual symphony composed of flesh;
A celebration through meditation that we are the universe.

We held onto nothing, and God couldn't stop laughing.
To see human existence begin and end in a blink...
It didn't matter...

To devote my attention

I am in love and always will be with more than just another,
but one whose eyes are as wide open as those staring back.

She's blessed me with visions, hints that there is more;
to humans, to reality, to living, to everything.

I'll never see how I once did,
because there isn't a "once did", only a now.

Outside of time, I've left my mind to linger among Gods.
Among monks and mystics, colors and portals
my body must go.

I'll return again.
I will never end.

Way of the Peaceful Warrior

Hello world, I've recently picked a book by Dan Millman entitled Way of the Peaceful Warrior. It's been a very strange experience reading this book; the situation of the protagonist, who also happens to be the author of this semi-fictitious autobiographical novel, resonates with this point in my life to the point where I'm convinced I wasn't suppose to read it until now. I actually remember seeing this book several times in the past at book stores, even vocalizing the title to myself, but not until have I peered into it.

The book is about Dan in his junior year in college. He becomes depressed, lost, and unfulfilled with the life he has led, and is baffled at why. One night he wanders the streets of San Fransisco and comes across a man at a gas station,(Although this is where it ceases to parallel my life, it's also where it gets interesting). The man becomes his mentor, teaching him to become more than just an athlete, or a great student, even more than a man. He begins picking his mind in a Zen fashion, and leading him to a life in which unconditional happiness and intrinsic awareness are all that are sought.

I haven't finished just yet, but I'm already so eager to read it again.

I'd recommend this book not just to anyone, but everyone.

"Mom, what's dying?"

I watched a show last night on the latest research of death. It described death as a process rather than a precise moment. Throughout the program it moved through several cases in which new methods were applied to patients in various conditions which would "blur the lines between life and death", as the narrator put it.

One case dealt with a man who lived through a heart attack, but wasn't instantly recovered. Like many survivors he awoke in a coma, and was threatened with brain damage if he survived. So, a doctor took a different approach to reviving him, and intentionally induced hypothermia. Evidently once brain cells have been deprived of oxygen for too long, an instant burst of oxygen is the last thing they need. So, the doc figured if he slowed his metabolism and lowered the levels of oxygen necessary to live he could slowly revive the patient by slowly exposing him to more and more oxygen. The guy woke up a couple of weeks later wondering how he got where he was, and was perfectly fine. Check it out link

It's Rainin' Blue

It's rainin' blue on this summer day
I've found I don't have much to say.
Not that I must or feel the need to,
Just starin' out while it's rainin' blue.
_________________________________

I actually wrote this in Belize in the summer of 2005, but it was a little shorter (if you can imagine). It was one sentence before, but i thought a couple extra lines wouldn't hurt. It was raining here, and it came to mind, so I thought to etch it into the endless walls of the internet-mind would be worth while.

Just typing...

I feel a change a'comin over me
Somethin' rude approachin' unapologetically.
It bends my bones, and redefines
The man behind the achin' eyes.

Internal dialouge gnawed relentlessly at the feet of my time,
But has made it's way unto another moving grave.
A youthful host of flesh, blood, and mistake;
One that catches only the cynical in it's wake.

Faith in the future, and faith in my body
To hold me patiently and carry me aimlessly
In the womb of futurity with spiritual fertility.

________

Why does the word "god" spur preconceived imagery? Automatically there is an assumption on what is being referenced. God is indefintely undefined in my mind, everchanging with my mood, needs, and imagination; an idea or concept so heavy, like god, should be personal on every level at all times. This understanding and acceptance of eachother's relationship with whatever god is, to us, should be the focus of praise and silence.

Gunslinger; Roland

So... I finally started reading Stephen King's series The Dark Tower, and have to say his abilities of comfortably expanding ONE moment across a whole page via descrpitive imagery tops even Lovecraft in this novel. Book One, The Gunslinger, has been the funnest and fastest read I've ever experienced; I'm nearly done with this book, and have had it since saturday. I usually take a couple months on a novel due to school and other responsibilities/burdens of mine, but this has rearranged my priorities in a great and fresh way. Ode to Sunshine is a great combo of soul, rock, blues and reminescent of the roots of American rock n roll. #3 People C'mon couldn't be better, it's mellow yet driving, which in a sense is a good meltdown of this album. Pick it up if you like black keys/shins/flaming lips...

H.P. Lovecraft

I'm currently reading At the Mountains of Madness and am flabbergasted by Lovecraft's writing abilities. Although he's a very important figure in sci-fi lit and one the most famous writers of the twentieth century, this is the first book I've read of his. It's a fairly short book and I'm about a thrid of the way through it. It's the story of an expedition to Antarctica by a group of scientists, biologists, geologists, grad students, and grunts that are intending to dig through the ice and rock for ancient soil samples. While there, among the curiously perfect weather conditions, a large portion of the team stumbles upon some strange artifacts and biological specimens. Anyways, I won't go any further, partly because I'M only a little further. Rumor has it that Del Torro (Hell Boy 2, Pan's Labrynth) will be directing his take on the horror classic sometime in the near future; I guess after the release of The Hobbit ? Here's some reviews of his script. One and Two.

Ancient Mariner Books

I visited a book store in Annaville today, yup it's blowing up, a fucking book store man! It's called "Ancient Mariner Books" and its located at 11229 Leopard, (right across from McDonalds on Violet). Surprisingly, and honestly, it's the coolest book store I've ever been in. The owner, Tim, was very friendly and excessively knowledgeable about literature. He has some of the rarest and most interesting books I've laid eyes on. I found a first edition of Einstein's Cosmic Religion , and he's holding it for me because I didn't have enough funds for my fancy. Anyways, if there are any Annavillians out there reading this, check it out for your own sake. This building is where it's at.

Benjamin Button

I saw The Curious Case of Benjamin Button last night and loved it. It was great visually, the cast was great, graphics of the old man were very believable, and the story amazing as well. Some very funny supporting characters; the "lightning guy" was hilarious, the captain/artist, as well as his mother. I say 5 stars, flawless. Brad Pitt took to this part very well, it being a very strange character for someone to imagine themselves as. Go see it for yourself.

This is a small story board I made the other day. Just laying out a couple sentences of a new story I'm working on.

Life On Mars???

Like I was talking about before, rumors have been shooting through the airwaves lately about NASA finding life on Mars, but to soothe all the conspirators they've released this article... enjoy CLICK ME

(1972) : Solaris

I just witnessed one of the greatest, and longest, sci-fi movies ever made. 'Solaris' , based on the novel by Stanislaw Lem, was a psychological sci-fi movie based on an alien planet that seems to be affected by the presence of the human conscience. The ocean-planet appears to feed off of dreams, brain waves, or just the psyche in general, but primarily at night time. In the words of Ken Andrews, it's "...ON AN OCEAN THAT HAS A BRAIN AND MAKES US DREAM." It physically manifests memories; places, people, etc. from one's past. Great movie, but it's about 3+ hours, so unless you really like old sci-fi, maybe just watch the remake, its about half the length. Click the title to check out the specs.

Some sweet videos posted on Nasa's site. I was reading about the new Phoenix discoveries on mars, and yes they did find water. Pineapple Express!!!

I saw a promotional screening of 'Pineapple Express' last night and I can't wait to see it again. I haven't laughed that hard at the movies, ever. James Franco was the best stoner ever, I wouldn't be surprised if he was actually high on set. Anyways, it was hilarious and Lumburg is the bad guy, and also hilarious. Go see this movie immediately... well when it comes out. FIVE STARS!!!! seriously five.

Hitchhiking in La Quemada

I took this photo on a road in La Quemada south of Zacatecas. It's two panoramic shots sewed together in photo-chop, making it a full 180 degrees!!! We got dropped off at the wrong place by our genius bus driver, and we caught another bus, and yet again were dropped off incorrectly. So we were walking down this road for awhile until we realized it. We hitchhiked to the road the ruins were located on. Anyways, check it out.

Galactus '08... and others

So maybe I'm going overboard with the whole Galactus thing, but probably not because he's GALACTUS. Anyways here's some variations of the original sketch... GALACTUS 08!!!

GALACTUS NOW!!!

If you don't know who galactus is, and your on my blog, now is the time to learn. Galactus is the cosmic character in the Marvel Comics Universe who eats planets, Gulay! He is my favorite marvel character not only because he eats planets, or because of his kick ass suit and helmet, but because he lived in the Universe that existed prior to the present as Galan. He lived through the Big Crunch and The Big Bang and is now considered a force of nature, not just a mere physical being. His path is like the word of god, undisputable, (except the O.G. Testament). This is my first sketch, I'm still working on it, but I figured I'd upload it anywho.

Mexican Church

I took this photo in Zacatecas, Mexico. It's supposedly one of the most catholic cities in all of Mexico, so pretty much right under the Vat. The city in general was amazing, everyone there was extremely kind to me as a tourist, which was surprising. I traveled all over the city, to it's mine's, mountains, museums, bars; everything was great. Inexpensive but not cheap, found some good musical instruments there, and had a chance to take some great photos.
